I am delighted to enclose this series of guides for secondary staff to help support dyslexic students across the curriculum. Meeting the additional needs of dyslexic pupils in the secondary school is the responsibility of the whole school, and many teachers have developed successful strategies and already give excellent support. However there are times when even the most effective teacher seeks additional help. These guides fill a gap and help all secondary staff gain additional knowledge about dyslexia and how it affects pupils in the various subject areas. More importantly it gives everyone useful information on a range of strategies to aid effective support.
Moira Thomson, an experienced teacher and manager with considerable knowledge of dyslexia, has taken a vast amount of current thinking and up-to-date research and put together these easy-to-follow guides. Whatever their current or previous level of knowledge, all will be able to find something that will enable them to help pupils cope with the various subjects in the best ways possible.
The guides can be used in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the school and the individuals. Support for Learning teachers and/or school managers can use the materials to help inform colleagues and parents, and perhaps (with the help of the CD-Rom) lead whole school continuing professional development.
One copy of these materials is being given free to all schools in Scotland. The materials can also be downloaded from this website or additional copies can be ordered for a small fee.
Advice can be obtained via the website or by emailing your questions to Moira Thomson.
Training opportunities are set out on both Learning and Teaching Scotland’s website and this website.
I trust you will find these materials very worthwhile, that they will support current developments by helping your dyslexic students to access A Curriculum for Excellence and help fulfil its aims of achieving successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
Yours sincerely

Dr Margaret Crombie
